News Broadcaster or Idol?

November 26, 2008 satsukiy

Today, many female news broadcasters report news on TV in Japan. Our society provides opportunities for more women to become a journalist. Some of them are middle-age and established their status as a journalist by going through their career. On the other hand, most female announcers are young and pretty. People and media treat them as a kind of idol. Young female broadcasters often appear in variety TV show and entertain us as either a host or guest.

One of my friend, an announcer of local TV station, was wondering if she could keep her career when she gets old because her co-workers retire before 30years-old. There are a few middle-age woman journalists. In addition, they work at key TV station.

Many chances to be a journalist has been provided for women recently but still now it is difficult to become real journalist because of “gender”.
